Initially, ITV was the syndication-run broadcaster of Star Trek. The series was not shown in airdate or production order, and the ITV recreated every episode for the 1980's syndication prints. The series was usually shown in three seasons as normal, just like their original NBC broadcasts. Star Trek was one of ITV's bigger ratings winners and was repeated throughout the mid-late 1980s and 1990-1998.

During their original run of The Original Series on ITV, it was followed by the UK television premiere of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which aired on 3 September 1984.

Apart from having commercial breaks, there were several differences in how the episodes were presented, compared to their original NBC broadasts:

Firstly, every ITV frontcap in every ITV region fades to the "teaser" scene, sometimes called a "cold open". Some episodes have every ITV frontcap in every ITV region fades out to black and stays for either a split second or 1 second before the "teaser" scene appears. After New Year's Eve 1987, the pre-programme frontcap idents come to an end and continue to appear on movies and imported programmes. After 1989, an announcer is heard over every ITV frontcap in every ITV region before the "teaser" scene comes.

Secondly, a still screenshot of James T. Kirk, Spock, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, Pavel Chekov, Christine Chapel, Uhura, Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy and Hikaru Sulu are all sitting inside USS Enterprise with the show's title card in either yellow during the first 2 seasons or blue during the 3rd and final season.

Finally, the Desilu and/or Paramount closing logos appear until it fades to every ITV endcap in every ITV region. Starting with the 2nd half of season 2, the Desilu logo was retired and replaced with the Paramount logo.
