Gene Roddenberry's original pitch for Star Trek described the ship's Captain Robert April as a "space-age Captain Horatio Hornblower". Both tales shared major themes centering on the Captain of a ship far from home, depending on his vessel, a loyal crew, and his own considerable wits to resolve military and diplomatic crises threatening his country's interests. While clearly bearing Roddenberry's stamp, the spirit of Nelson, Hornblower, and the Age of Sail was evident throughout the franchise and most prominent in original series episodes like The Corbomite Maneuver, Balance of Terror, Arena and The Doomsday Machine, as well as the films Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

The portrayal James T Kirk as a decisive, often inspired, man of action was very close to Hornblower, but Jean-Luc Picard more closely resembled the literary hero's introverted, intellectual nature. Spock and William Riker share qualities with Hornblower's faithfull Lieutenant Bush, all initially more comfortable at their Captain's right hand than as commanders in their own right. In either tale, sailing ship or starship would be used in an inventive new manner as often as fighting a battle.

La Forge's model of Nelson's HMS Victory

Horatio Nelson was a vice admiral of His Britannic Majesty's Royal Navy in the early 19th century on Earth. In 1805 he led his fleet to victory against a larger combined French and Spanish force at the Battle of Trafalgar, the decisive naval engagement of the Napoleonic Wars. Nelson was wounded in the battle, dying below decks on his flagship HMS Victory.

Geordi La Forge built a detailed model of Nelson's Victory as a gift for his former commander, Captain Zimbata of the USS Victory in 2365. (TNG: "Elementary, Dear Data")

While deciding whether or not to retreat from a Borg cube laying in wait for the USS Enterprise-D in 2366, Captain Picard thought of Nelson. Talking with Guinan, he recalled the Admiral's tour of the Victory preceding his final battle. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds")

Two Federation starships were named after Royal Navy sailing ships commanded by Nelson.

Nelson's legendary career inspired "Horatio Hornblower", the title character of a popular series of novels and stories written by C.S. Forester in the mid-20th century. In turn, the literary hero had a significant influence on Star Trek.

In an alternate reality, Nelson was honored with a monument known as Nelson's Column in London. (Star Trek Into Darkness)
