In Greek mythology, Hêra was the sister and wife of Zeus, king of the gods. She was the goddess of marriage and family and Queen of the Olympians. She was also the sister of Poseidon and Hades and the mother of Ares, Hebe, Eilithyia and Hephaestus.
According to Apollo, Hêra was actually a member of a sophisticated race of beings who considered themselves gods. And, in a certain sense, they were gods: they had the power of life and death, the power to alter themselves and the world around them, and their displeasure was generally fatal. Certainly, the ancient Greeks with whom they interacted while on Earth considered them gods.
According to Apollo, Hera had been the first of his race to leave her body by spreading herself thinner and thinner until she was gone. By 2267, when the USS Enterprise met Apollo, all other gods save for him had followed Hêra. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")
