The Hegh'bat was a Klingon ritual suicide. Tradition dictated that the eldest son – or, if he was unavailable, a close friend – must assist. That person's role was to hand the dying Klingon a knife so that he could plunge it into his heart. The helper then removed it and then wiped the blood off on their sleeve. (TNG: "Ethics")
