A hearse was an automobile designed to transport the bodies of those who have died.
In 2268 on Sigma Iotia II, operatives of Jojo Krako who detained James T. Kirk told him that his method of transportation could be "either a taxi or a hearse". This implied that a lack of cooperation on his part would lead to his death. (TOS: "A Piece of the Action")
