Lieutenant Hawk was a Human male Starfleet officer assigned to the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E in 2373, where he served as the ship's conn officer.
In that capacity, he served on the bridge of the Enterprise during Starfleet's battle with a Borg cube in Sector 001, and piloted the ship through a temporal vortex to the year 2063, in pursuit of a Borg sphere which had been launched from the cube.
Along with Captain Picard and Lieutenant Commander Worf, Hawk attempted to prevent the Borg from transforming the Enterprise's deflector dish into an interplexing beacon with which to contact the Borg living in the 21st century. As the three of them attempted to release all three maglocks in order to disengage the deflector dish from the ship, they came under attack by Borg drones, one of which was able to subdue Hawk before he could release his maglock. Hawk was subsequently assimilated, and thereafter attempted to stop Picard from releasing the last maglock. As Hawk, now a drone, attempted to shatter the faceplate of Picard's EV suit, he was shot and killed by a phaser rifle wielded by Lieutenant Commander Worf. (Star Trek: First Contact)

Background information
Hawk was portrayed by actor Neal McDonough.
The bios in Star Trek: Starship Creator written by Mike and Denise Okuda specify Hawk's first name as Neal, while the Pocket TNG novel Rogue, part of the Star Trek: Section 31 series of novels, gives him the name of Sean Liam Hawk, which is continually used into Star Trek: Titan. Furthermore, the story "Seeing Forever" in Strange New Worlds IV establishes his first name as Ren.
Star Trek: Starship Creator and its sequel have Neal Hawk on the selectable crew roster, stating that he survived being assimilated and being shot by Worf and made a full recovery, earning a purple-heart in the process.
While rumors have persisted that Lt. Hawk was originally intended to be Star Trek's first openly gay character, the producers of Star Trek: First Contact and actor Neal McDonough have denied this. (citation needed • edit) However, Hawk is indeed depicted as being gay in the novel Section 31: Rogue, which has been referenced again in the Star Trek: Titan novel series, where his partner, an unjoined Trill male named Ranul Keru, serves as the Titan's chief of security.
