Television, time stream

Harry S. Truman as seen (on television) in the time stream

Harry S. Truman was a 20th century Human who served as the 33rd President of the United States from 1945 to 1953.

In 1947, Truman faced several questions following the crash, in Roswell, New Mexico, of what was initially thought to be a Martian spacecraft but was actually a Ferengi shuttle. Known for being an impatient man, Truman demanded immediate answers from base commander Lieutenant General Denning, while limiting the number of individuals participating in the investigation.

Upon the realization that the Martians, later determined to be Ferengi, came from a species far more advanced than Humanity, Truman wanted the base personnel to try to talk to them; a task assigned to Professor Jeff.

Once communication was established and demands were made, the Ferengi leader Quark threatened to take his business to the Russians if the Americans did not wish to cooperate. General Denning's response was that he did not have the authority to make such a decision, and that he would have to get clearance from Truman.

After relaying the Ferengi demands to Truman, General Denning stated, "That little piano-playing Democrat's not as dumb as he looks." He noted that Truman was not about to make any deals with the Ferengi until the Americans could learn more about them, a task he was willing to leave in Denning's capable hands. (DS9: "Little Green Men")

A family was seen watching a television broadcast of President Truman delivering a speech as the time stream reset itself in 2154. (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II")

In a developmental memo Gene Roddenberry wrote Robert H. Justman about TOS: "The Enemy Within" (dated 23 May 1966), Roddenberry postulated, "Truman could have owned Kansas City." (In the memo's previous sentence, Roddenberry made a similar observation about Winston Churchill.)
The Federation starships USS Truman (DS9: "Field of Fire") and USS Truman (Star Trek) may have been named in honor of Truman.
According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 527), Harry S. Truman was born in 1884 and died in 1972.
