The natives of planet Hanon IV were a proto-humanoid species, on the verge of civilization. They are divided into tribes of approximately 20 people, with a central leading figure, similar to an elder.

The native was in the party that captured Kes and Neelix. He was amazed at Kes' appearance because of her blond hair. He touched her hair and wanted to keep her for himself. Neelix told him not to touch her. Another native also wanted Kes, and the two began fighting for her. When Chakotay appeared on the scene, the native wanted to harm him, but the leader of the tribe, the medicine man, stopped him. When Chakotay attempted to leave with Kes and Neelix, the native led the persuit after them, but was shot with an arrow by other Voyager crewmen hiding behind the rocks. (VOY: "Basics, Part II")

The native was a member of the tribe that captured Kes and Neelix. He fought with another tribe member because they both wanted Kes. They had never seen a fair skinned and blonde haired humanoid before. (VOY: "Basics, Part II")

Hanon medicine man
A medicine man
The Hanon medicine man was the leader of the tribe that the crew of Voyager encountered on Hanon IV. After capturing Kes and Neelix, he tried to give Chakotay a native woman in exchange for Kes. After a volcanic eruption, Chakotay saved one of his tribe, and he an the medicine man relations improved, initially being one of violence. The medicine man would heal Ensign Wildman's newborn who was suffering from lung congestion by using native roots and plants to heal her. (VOY: "Basics, Part II")
