Hanon IV is an M-Class planet in the Hanon system, near Kazon-Nistrim space in the Delta Quadrant. It is at a stage of development equivalent to Earth's Pliocene Age.

Hanon IV hosts a proto-humanoid species, on the verge of civilization. They are divided into caravans of approximately 20 people, with a central leading figure, similar to an elder.

History

In 2373, the crew of the USS Voyager were marooned there by First Maje Jal Culluh. Left without any technology, they were forced to live there for days to weeks, with little food and water. While there, they made first contact with the natural inhabitants (the proto-humanoids). After a volcanic eruption, and Lieutenant Commander Chakotay saved one of their kind, their relations improved, initially being one of violence. They were rescued a short time later after Voyager had been retaken.

Later that year, Voth scientists Forra Gegan and Veer visited the planet, and excavated the remains of Ensign Hogan.

Environmental

Hanon IV is in a period of severe seismic and volcanic activity. Earthquakes are not rare, and volcanic eruptions are periodic.

The planets temperature varies greatly from day to night. During the day, it is often intensely hot, while at night the drops to a very cold temperature.

Botanical

Water is scarce on the planet, so there is little plant life. But the proto-humanoid inhabitants have found some plants, and herbs that can be used for medicinal purposes. Each of the proto-humanoid inhabitants carry a branch/stick with them, so there is probably some kind of tree life on the planet.

Zoological

Hanon IV is home to several known species of animals. The Hanonian land eel is a large cave-dwelling creature, that eats humanoids. It is also home to small, edible "worm-grubs", that live under rocks. Large white eggs have been found, implying some kind of bird or reptilian species.
