The Lord Nelson was named in honor of Admiral Horatio Nelson, who led the Royal Navy to victory in the Battle of Trafalgar. The vessel was probably built by the United Kingdom, judging by the "HMS" prefix and the name. This also makes a point that the United Kingdom still has a reigning monarch in the early 22nd century, however as per the current conventions, the position probably remains constitutionally limited.

HMS Lord Nelson was a Terran DY-500-B (sub)class starship that was in service in the early 22nd century.

In 2120, Captain Young Jae was the commanding officer of this starship. In that year, the Lord Nelson was launched from Earth for a deep space exploration mission in the region of space between the sectors 184/02 and 185/38. (TNG: "Up The Long Ladder", okudagram)

Background

The name of this ship was mentioned in a list of ships that were launched from Earth, with destinations in or near to the Ficus sector, between the years 2123 and 2190. This list was displayed on Jean-Luc Picard's desk monitor in his ready room aboard the USS Enterprise-D. A legible version of the okudagram first appeared in the reference book, Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Continuing Mission. The list became legible to viewers with the remastered episode.

It was one of two ships with the HMS prefix on the list, the other being the HMS New Zealand. The Lord Nelson was named in honor of Admiral Horatio Nelson, who led the Royal Navy to victory in the Battle of Trafalgar.}}
