A guerrilla is a type of fighter that uses non-standard tactics to achieve his or her goals. Guerrilla warfare is usually employed in response to an occupation, such as the Bajoran Resistance. (DS9: "Emissary")
Tactics
Guerrillas typically use ambush and sabotage as opposed to open fighting. It was common for Bajoran resistance cells to avoid fighting and hide from Cardassian patrols using sensor ghosts. Bajoran Resistance cells operated in rugged mountainous terrain they knew well. This allowed them to launch surprise attacks and corner pursuers more easily. The Maquis operated near the Badlands close to the Demilitarized Zone where the sensor interference gave their ships an advantage. In contrast to open warfare, guerrilla cells do not usually attack civilian targets; this is because they are attempting to unify their people against an alien force. They do attack civilians as punishment for collaborating with the enemy.
