Gosis species military badge

A military badge worn by members of Gosis' species

Gosis's species are a humanoid race that inhabit a pre-warp planet. First Starfleet contact was made by Captain Jonathan Archer, Lieutenant Malcolm Reed and Ensign Hoshi Sato in 2152.

Their unofficial name is derived from General Gosis, the head of the army of one of the factions on the planet. (ENT: "The Communicator")

Physiology

Gosis

General Gosis, a male of this species

This species' physiology is particularly different from Humans, aside from the facial ridges and spots that Humans lack. When Temec, a doctor, compared a scan of Human physiology to their own he pointed out that his species did not have a liver, or at least it was unrecognizably different ("we don't even know what this organ does"). He also pointed out that they only have one kidney, describing the Human kidneys as a "redundant renal organ." And his species' blood is neither red nor contains iron, a toxic element to their species.

History

By the 2150s, their race was divided into at least two 'major' political nation states, one of which was called "the Alliance." It was believed based on propaganda that a war that seemed inevitable to the military leadership in 2152. The war would have been based in part upon "ancestral claims" by the Alliance on Gosis's faction's capital.

Legal system

Little is known of their legal system, except that the Gosis faction does practice the death penalty. Their preferred method of implementing the sentence appears to be hanging.

The government of at least the area inhabited by General Gosis appears to be in civilian hands, as evidenced by the attendance of the Enterprise away team at a political rally held by a "Chancellor Kutare". However, the influence of the military is strong.

The aggressive interrogation Archer and Reed receive—even when Gosis believes they are citizens of the planet—suggests that individual rights may not be strictly observed. Furthermore, it is possible that the area is under some form of martial law, given the way in which the bartender informed the military of Reed and Archer's suspicious behavior.

Technology

In the 2150s, the technological level of the planet appears to be on a rough par with late 20th century Earth, although they haven't yet "split the atom". They are shown to have reliable artificial illumination, a knowledge of computers, familiarity with telecommunication, methods of observing internal organs, ways to photograph objects in planetary orbit, automatic projectile weapons. automobiles, trains, and jet aircraft.

In addition, they seem to grasp the basic working concept of the away team's phasers, which may suggest they have taken rudimentary steps in the development of particle weapons.

Religion

Although details are unknown, the species practices (or has practiced) a well-developed religion, centered in elaborate temples.

Architecture

Reed and Sato were equally impressed with the aesthetics of the architecture of the city they visited. Enterprise orbital scans of the city revealed a dense developmental pattern. Functionally, the architecture was of sufficient design to accommodate a high population density.

Because of the brief stay the Enterprise away team has in decon, it may be assumed that the city's builders also were capable of constructing efficient sanitation systems which tended to keep disease away from the population.
