Gilbert and Sullivan were a human musical composition team from Earth's late 19th century, made up of playwright/lyricist William S. Gilbert (1836 – 1911) and composer Arthur S. Sullivan (1842 – 1900). Gilbert and Sullivan were popular for satirical operettas which poked fun at society, in particular British society of the Victorian era. Their most famous operettas were HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado.
In 2368, Beverly Crusher encouraged Geordi La Forge to sing the role of the Major-General in The Pirates of Penzance. La Forge was reluctant, but Crusher convinced him to attempt to sing "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General".
