The Genesis sector was a region of space encompassing the Genesis planet.
In 2285, the USS Enterprise dropped out of warp as it entered the Genesis sector on its way to the Genesis planet. At this point of time it was also detected by Kruge's Bird-of-Prey. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)
It is possible that the Genesis sector is a synonym or subsection of the Mutara sector.
