Gathorel Labin

Magistrate Gath Labin (2371)

Gathorel Labin was a Sikarian magistrate who invited the crew of the USS Voyager to his home planet in 2371. Gathorel preferred to be called simply Gath. He became attracted to Captain Kathryn Janeway, and spent much time with her on his planet. Janeway discovered that the Sikarians had technology called a spatial trajector which folded space and made it possible to travel thousands of light years in seconds. She asked Gath for this technology. He explained that his planet's prime directive prevented them from sharing their technology with less-advanced races. It was ironic for Starfleet to find itself on the short end of the "prime directive" stick for a change! Janeway implored Gath for the technology—offering to trade the entire library of the Federation to Gath's literature-adoring civilization—and he said he would discuss the matter with the other administrators—though he secretly never intended to give her the trajector. While Gath stalled Janeway, Torres and Seska planned to secretly obtain the trajector over the black market. They were surprised when Tuvok intercepted their plan—only to buy the technology himself from the black marketeer! Torres disobeyed Tuvok's direct order by installing the trajector, only to discover that the technology was incompatible with the Enterprise systems—very nearly destroying the Enterprise in the process. Torres was severely reprimanded by Janeway, but the captain dealt differently with Tuvok, imploring him to resist such temptations in the future so that he could always serve as her "moral compass." "My logic was not in error, but I was," concluded Tuvok, and the voyagers continued the journey homeward—without benefit of Sikarian technological wonders. (VOY: "Prime Factors")

Gath Labin was played by actor Ronald Guttman.
