Gary Seven was a Human male whose ancestors were abducted from Earth around 4000 BC. He held the position of Class One Supervisor, known as Supervisor 194. He was grown and conditioned in some way which allowed him to have a completely healthy and flawless body; furthermore he was insensitive to the impact of the Vulcan nerve pinch.

He was sent to Earth in 1968 to discover why his superiors lost contact with Agent 201 and Agent 347. When he discovered they were killed in an automobile accident, he assumed their mission.

Using advanced alien technology, including the Beta 5 computer hidden in his office in Apartment 12B at 811 East 68th Street in New York City, he continued the dead agents' mission to make sure mankind did not destroy itself with nuclear weapons.

When his transporter beam was intercepted by the USS Enterprise, it appeared that the Enterprise crew would prevent him from stopping the upcoming launch of a nuclear missile. His efforts were eventually successful. Seven used the Beta 5 exceiver circuits to cause the third stage of the American rocket to malfunction. It veered off course and the warhead exploded 104 miles above ground. This caused the nuclear powers to re-assess the risks of an orbiting nuclear platform.

He remained behind on Earth to carry out other missions with his assistants: Roberta Lincoln, a Human female from Earth of that time period to whom he accidentally described his mission, and Isis, his mysterious cat. (TOS: "Assignment: Earth")

Assignment: Earth

The episode "Assignment: Earth" was a television pilot for a proposed series about Gary Seven, a human who lives on Earth but who works for the inhabitants of another planet. The crew of the Starship Enterprise, who have been sent back in time by the United Federation of Planets to find out what actually had occurred on Earth in 1968, accidentally intercept the transporter beam which is sending Seven to Earth.

Seeing humans and Vulcans together, Seven realizes that the starship has come from the future, while the crew suspect that Seven is also a time-traveler.

Seven, a supervisor, has been sent to determine why two resident agents had stopped reporting. When he discovers that they had been killed in an automobile accident, he takes over their immediate task of sabotaging the launch of an orbital missile platform by the United States to prevent nuclear war on Earth.

Seven's secretary is Miss Roberta Lincoln (portrayed by Teri Garr) who was originally unaware of Seven's origins, thinking she had been hired by a couple (the agents who had died) that was researching a new encyclopedia. Seven also had a constant companion in Isis, who at first appears to be an ordinary cat, but is shown to have great intelligence and in fact turns out to be able to alter its shape to become what appears to be a human female, which Miss Lincoln discovers during one scene as Isis changes shape into a human female and then back into a cat. Although Miss Lincoln had earlier tried to foil Seven (thinking him to be a spy), the two begin to work together.

At the end of the episode, Captain Kirk informs Seven and Lincoln that he has checked Federation records, and found that the new team would have "many adventures." The original A:E proposal involved Gary Seven being sent back from the future to 1960s Earth to battle time-travelling Omegans trying to change history (an idea surprisingly similar to the Temporal Cold War storyline in Enterprise some 35 years later). Powers and abilities[edit source | editbeta]

Although Seven is human, he manifests at least one non-human feature: he is insensitive to the impact of the Vulcan nerve pinch, an ability very few human or humanoid characters of the Star Trek universe ever manifested. Seven utilizes a small pen-shaped device called a servo which is a tool capable of almost anything. It functions as a communication device, a remote control to his personal transporter, a handheld weapon with both stun and kill settings and enough precision (and restraint) to cut a telephone wire from across a room, a remote manipulator to circuitry and machinery (used to deactivate the force field keeping him in the brig of the USS Enterprise), and a mechanical manipulation device (unscrewing screws, unlocking doors, etc.). (Physically and in terms of function, it had some similarity to the sonic screwdriver used by the Doctor on Doctor Who. In fact, the sonic screwdriver appeared on television screens in the UK just 13 days before Assignment: Earth aired in the United States.) Other references

Gary Seven was played by actor Robert Lansing. He was intended to be the lead role of an unproduced spin-off of Star Trek, with "Assignment: Earth" acting as a pilot.
In the Eugenics Wars series of novels, Seven continues his mission to prevent global war – this time, keeping the superhumans like Khan from destroying the world in their mad bid for dominance.
He also appeared in the novel Assignment: Eternity along with Roberta Lincoln, the short story "The Aliens Are Coming!" from Strange New Worlds III, the short story "Seven and Seven" in Strange New Worlds VI, the short story "Assignment: One" in Strange New Worlds VIII, and the short story "Rocket Man" in Strange New Worlds 9. Gary Seven was no stranger to Star Trek comics, appearing in four issues from DC Comics, "The Peacekeeper Part One", "The Peacekeeper Part Two: The Conclusion", "Split Infinities", and "Future Imperiled". He was most recently seen in the IDW Publishing series Star Trek: Assignment Earth, written and drawn by John Byrne.
