The Gamma Canaris region was a region located in Federation space near the Epsilon Canaris system.
In 2267, while transporting a terminally-ill Commissioner Nancy Hedford from Epsilon Canaris III, the Enterprise shuttlecraft Galileo was pulled off course and forced to land on an planetoid in this region. The reasons for this change of course and forced landing officially remain unknown, but Commissioner Hedford was deemed lost.
Unofficially, the shuttlecraft had been veered off course by an entity known as the Companion. This was done in order to give Zefram Cochrane contact with some of his own kind. It was revealed that Cochrane, the human inventor of Earth's warp drive who had disappeared centuries prior, had ended up in the Gamma Canaris system where he was rejuvenated (and loved) by the Companion.
