Early in the five-year mission, Galloway teamed up with Fields on at least one assignment.

During the visit to Miri's planet on stardate 2713.5, Galloway joined Security Officer Fields as part of the security detail for the landing party. Together, they provided Spock some protection as the first officer scoured an alleyway. When Spock noticed that the Onlies were throwing debris at them from above, the Vulcan instinctively pulled Galloway and Fields away from the falling debris. Later, when McCoy was conducting his medical research in the hospital laboratory, Galloway and Fields guarded the entrance to the lab. (Miri)

Leslie
Among the Enterprise officers, Galloway had a good working relationship with Lieutenant Leslie and they were paired together on at least three important missions.

On stardate 2823.1, Leslie was on hand to assist Galloway in the transporter room and beam the survivors of the Galileo. During the mission to Beta III on stardate 3156.2, the two of them were assigned to the security detail for the second landing party. On stardate 4523.3, Leslie and Galloway witnessed Kirk being buried by an avalanche of tribbles on Deep Space Station K-7. During the five-year mission, Galloway worked once with Lieutenant Osborne. This occurred when the Enterprise visited Eminiar VII on stardate 3192.1.

After the landing party escaped the confinement imposed upon them by High Councilor Anan 7, both Galloway and Osborne disguised themselves as Eminian guards. Their actions ultimately allowed Kirk and Spock to bring an end to the war between Eminiar and Vendikar. (A Taste of Armageddon)

Infections and injuries
Throughout the five-year mission, Galloway was exposed to certain dangers during his years of service aboard the Enterprise. As a result, he suffered some infections and injuries.

On stardate 2713.5, Galloway was infected with the life prolongation complex for several days before McCoy created a vaccine that cured him of the disease. Years later, he was exposed to the Omega IV virus. (Miri)

James Blish's adaptations explained his demise and return. It may be that the lieutenant who appeared in Turnabout Intruder was actually Johnson, not Galloway, since Ross' character was addressed by Spock only as "Lieutenant" in this episode and not by a surname. Unfortunately, this explanation is difficult to reconcile especially since Ross was given on-screen credit for the episode as "Lt. Galoway" [sic].

In the James Blish/J.A. Lawrence novelization of "The Omega Glory", the security guard who was killed by Tracey was identified as "Lieutenant Raintree", not Galloway. If Tracey murdered Raintree, then it would be possible for Galloway to be alive in Turnabout Intruder. However, this story adaptation contradicts the name of the murdered security guard in the episode, especially since Kirk and Spock addressed him as "Galloway". Since the story adaptation is not considered canon, this explanation cannot be accepted as the official reason for Galloway's reappearance.

In the James Blish novelization of "Day of the Dove", the security guard who was injured in a sword fight with the Klingons and later healed by the Beta XII-A entity was known as "Lieutenant Galloway", not Lieutenant Johnson. Even though this would provide a good explanation for Galloway's reappearance, this non-canon story adaptation does not explain why the Enterprise crew members regularly called him "Johnson" during an episode which gave Ross on-screen credit as "Lt. Johnson".

Lieutenant Galloway was a male Human Starfleet officer in the 23rd century. He served in the operations division aboard the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk between 2266 and 2269, during the historic five-year mission.

Starfleet service

Galloway was assigned to the operations division as a security officer on the Enterprise. He once performed the duties of a transporter chief. (TOS: "The Galileo Seven")

His first assignment happened on stardate 2713.5, when the starship encountered Miri's homeworld. He was a member of the landing party and was unknowingly exposed to a viral infection. He escorted First Officer Spock during an attack by the inhabitants. He also guarded a hospital lab where Doctor Leonard McCoy conducted his medical research. He was cured of the virus after McCoy discovered a vaccine. (TOS: "Miri")

On stardate 2821.5, he beamed in the survivors of the Galileo before the shuttlecraft incinerated around Taurus II. (TOS: "The Galileo Seven") He was a member of the Beta III landing party on stardate 3156.2 and was temporarily absorbed into the Body of Landru. (TOS: "The Return of the Archons")

He was imprisoned on Eminiar VII with the landing party on stardate 3192.1 and escaped with them while disguised as an Eminian guard. He assisted Spock in rescuing Ambassador Robert Fox from death in a disintegration station and guarded the Eminian High Council chamber as Kirk and Spock ended Eminiar's war with Vendikar. (TOS: "A Taste of Armageddon")

Later that year, he discovered an unconscious Lieutenant Kyle in the transporter room after a cordrazine-crazed McCoy beamed down to the surface of the time planet. He joined the landing party in search of the doctor. (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever") The following year, he guarded the quadrotriticale storage compartment aboard Deep Space Station K-7 and witnessed an avalanche of tribbles falling on Kirk. (TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles"; DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations")

Galloway doesnt really die

An injured Galloway falling victim to a phaser blast

He was killed on Omega IV by Captain Ronald Tracey in 2268. After exposure to the Omega IV virus and injured from an attack by a hostile tribe, he was vaporized by phaser fire at the hands of the USS Exeter captain. (TOS: "The Omega Glory")

He was restored to life by 2269 and returned to active duty by stardate 5928.5. On his last assignment, he guarded the holding cell of Doctor Janice Lester, who was actually Kirk through a switch by a life-energy transfer machine. He witnessed Spock performing a Vulcan mind meld and was the victim of a Vulcan nerve pinch when he resisted the first officer's attempts to convince him of the truth. (TOS: "Turnabout Intruder")

Memorable quotes

In "Turnabout Intruder", Galloway refuses to believe Spock's statement that Lester is Kirk.

Galloway: "You're asking me to violate the captain's orders."
Spock: "He is not the captain."
Galloway: "You're as mad as she is. You're to leave here at once. I follow orders."
Spock: "Certainly, Lieutenant. We all must do our duty."
