A fusion reactor or fusion power plant was a power generation device, which used nuclear fusion to generate energetic plasma for various uses.

Inside such a reactor, two deuterium atoms were fused together to form a single helium atom. This reaction generated a massive amount of energy, which could be used to power various systems.

Impulse power of Federation starships was generated by fusion reactors. These reactors were components of the fusion reaction systems. Aboard the Galaxy-class starships, the primary systems were located on decks 23 and 24. (TNG: "Contagion", display graphic)

Each of the Argus Array's antennae were powered by its own fusion reactor, controlled by a single computer. In all, there were eighteen reactors aboard the telescope. (TNG: "The Nth Degree")

Delphic Expanse sphere were powered by 7 fusion reactors, each being almost twelve kilometers in length. (ENT: "Anomaly")

Cardassian-built reactors were based on a series of carbon reaction chambers, which uses laser-induced fusion. According to the specifications for Cardassian fusion reactors, the operating efficiency was acceptable at as low as twenty percent peak efficiency. In 2369, Chief O'Brien conducted a diagnostic of Deep Space 9's fusion power plant. The results were found to be thirteen percent below normal, well with Cardassian specifications, but not O'Brien's. To increase operating efficiency, O'Brien increased the deuterium flow to the carbon reaction chamber by five percent, while at the same time observing the exhaust fusion temperature. (DS9: "The Forsaken")

In late 2369, Chief O'Brien came late for repairs in the security office because another fusion reactor went down. (DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets")

The fusion reactor in the Uxbridge's house on Delta Rana IV would last for five more years in 2366 before it would run out of energy. (TNG: "The Survivors")

One way to shut down DS9's reactor involves manually disengaging the laser fusion initiators in the reactor room, or one of the stations control junctions found on Level 34. (DS9: "Civil Defense")

The self-destruct sequence of DS9 involves the computer ordering the station's main fusion reactor to disengage the reaction stabilizers, causing the reactor to overload, and the station to destroy itself. (DS9: "Civil Defense")

In 2372, the USS Voyager nearly drained its fusion reactors while attempting to land safely amidst a massive electrical storm, produced by the Sky Spirits. (VOY: "Tattoo")
