I wonder if it would theoretically be possible to create some kind of a WikiMap, a tool to jointly contribute to a map of the Star Trek-universe online, which could be embedded in Memory Alpha. Having a 2-dimensional ( I think 3-D would not be feasable) interface, locations of star systems, borders, nebulas, flight routes etc. could be drawn in based on canon information and locations of real stars, similar to already existing Star Trek-star charts. --BlueMars 18:26, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- Without commenting on what this thread is actually about, I feel compelled to again comment on choice of thread name. Is it so hard for everyone to come up with something short? Why is this "Has anyone ever thought about a kind of WikiMap: Creating a map of the Star Trek-universe together online?" It could be something MUCH shorter, more like "WikiMap of Star Trek Universe". --OuroborosCobra talk 01:59, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well... Re:Topic: it is a little long, but forum pages can be moved just like any other article, and I'll do that now.
- Re:Map on MA: have a look at our "planet"/"sector"/... articles. We don't know the exact location for most of them, so I'm not sure how this could even be a valid topic for MA (without adding speculation, that is).
- Re:Map in general: actually, I tried something like this about 4 years ago. I started with the Hipparcos database, took the "local" part of that (a radius of about 150ly around Sol) and tried to fit Treks universe into that while creating a 3D-map of all of it. I never completed that, but during the process found that it is a) very difficult and b) nearly impossible as a community project, because sometimes, you just have to make arbitrary decisions regarding locations, distances etc. Good look with your project, though... -- Cid Highwind 09:40, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
