How is Lt. Rollins Tom Paris' direct superior in "Investigations" (they got into an argument off screen) but Paris is heavily implied to be Voyager's third officer in episodes like "Unimatrix Zero" and "Hope and Fear"? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.69.9.224 (talk).

Implied to be something does not mean that they actually were- but third officer would be a position, not a rank. Rollins might supervise Paris in another capacity. 31dot (talk) 03:13, November 1, 2013 (UTC)
So when Paris was in command, he outranked Rollins? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.67.32.161 (talk).
This sounds similar to what happened in "The Arsenal of Freedom" where Geordi was in command of the Enterprise despite the Chief Engineer having a higher rank than him. Geordi was still in command, because the Captain wanted him to be. 31dot (talk) 09:58, August 22, 2014 (UTC)
Geordi LaForge WAS the cheif engineer. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.126.28.59 (talk).
He wasn't in the first season. 31dot (talk) 09:05, December 31, 2014 (UTC)
