History/Conflict articles
this wiki
Forum page
This forum is to solicit ideas and comments on cleaning up the history and conflict articles. The objective is threefold: reduce the number of articles covering the same subject in the text, establish a consistent naming scheme for descriptive titles, and create a easy to understand and navigate "tree" for articles.
I have a few ideas on this to start out with. First, Category:Conflicts would be placed under Category:History. This covers the massive amount of overlap between the two. Second, all articles should start with the most general title, which in the case of history articles, it would be the species (under interstellar history). Shared history articles could then be created, as necessary, by breaking down the species history article from there. A number of fan named conflict articles should then be change to more general history articles. The overall changes would be:
- Federation-Klingon Cold War renamed to Human-Klingon history (the "cold war" pre-dates the Federation)
- Federation-Dominion Cold War needs a better name, as the "cold war" included the Federation-Klingon War (2372-73) and the Battle of the Omarion Nebula. Something like "Alpha-Gamma Quadrant cold war" maybe?
- Federation-Romulan Cold War renamed to Human-Romulan history and expanded to include the Earth-Romulan War and TOS events
- Vulcan-Andorian Cold War renamed to Vulcan-Andorian history
I would also suggest that some sort of navigation template be created for History articles, so it's easier to move back "up" the tree. This is already covered on conflict articles with the "Part of:" call. Thoughts? - Archduk3 21:16, July 6, 2011 (UTC)
- I support your placement of the category and the renaming of the articles as you described.--31dot 23:56, July 6, 2011 (UTC)
- Splendid idea, Archduk3. Of course I had the same thing in mind ;-P We definitely need some category-templates à la "Klingons" (covering culture, history, technology etc) or "Timetravel" etc.... --36ophiuchi 20:11, August 14, 2011 (UTC)
- Which kind of template/navigation box should be prefered? A bottom- or a side-bound one (e.g. [1] or [2])? Which categories/topics should receive such a box in addition to those on MA which already have one? --36ophiuchi 06:56, August 16, 2011 (UTC)
I generally don't like using wikipedia boxes as a guideline, since were much smaller and more specialized. That said, I was thinking of either navigation link boxes like {{Federation wars}} or the tree style of {{casualties}}. These would be used on history articles to show a "parent" article "above" the one you are currently on. I didn't really get far into this before wikia induced problems distracted me, so it's still very much in the planning stage. - Archduk3 22:33, August 17, 2011 (UTC)
