It is unknown whether the Federation News Service is a state-supported agency.
The nature of the Federation News Service's relationship to the Federation government is unclear. While it is possible that FNS may be an agency of the Federation government, it seems somewhat ominous to think that the Federation government is essentially managing one of the major news agencies in the UFP.

On the other hand, an analogous organization - the [[BBC]] - is consistently critical of Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, or the Voice of America (VOA). Indeed, many countries maintain state-funded but independent broadcasting organizations. It is also possible that the Federation News Service is actually a private organization, in much the same way that the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), and Federal Express are not agencies of the United States Government.

Federation news service

FNS reporters and other journalists at the launch of the USS Enterprise-B in 2293

The Federation News Service was an agency that published news of notable events in the United Federation of Planets and known space.

Several reporters from different agencies, including the FNS, traveled aboard the USS Enterprise-B during her maiden voyage in 2293. Many of the reporters were utilized as "nurses" following the rescue of the El-Aurian passengers from the SS Lakul. (Star Trek Generations)

While the Federation News Service was neither mentioned in the movie nor in the script, a tag worn by a journalist displays an affiliation with the FNS, while others read "Starfleet Broadcasting" and "GNN", possibly standing for Galactic News Service.

Several weeks before the beginning of the Dominion War, Jake Sisko became a reporter for the Federation News Service. He remained on Deep Space 9 when the Dominion forced the Federation to abandon it, to report on the impending Occupation. In early 2374, he attempted to obtain an interview with Weyoun, the Dominion's Alpha Quadrant administrator, for the FNS. Weyoun refused, claiming his reports were biased against the Dominion. Weyoun had also not transmitted Jake's earlier reports to the Federation News Service for the same reason. When asked about freedom of the press, Weyoun simply remarked that such beliefs were naive. (DS9: "Call to Arms", "A Time to Stand")

FNS openly broadcast that the war was going badly in early 2374, although the situation was actually much worse. (DS9: "A Time to Stand")

After the Federation retook DS9, the Federation News Service published Jake's accounts of life during the Dominion Occupation. (DS9: "You Are Cordially Invited")

Later that year, Jake promised his editor at FNS an interview with the Grand Nagus of the Ferengi Alliance, Zek. (DS9: "Valiant")

In late 2374, Jake was aboard the USS Defiant during the First Battle of Chin'toka to report on the events of the battle for the News Service. (DS9: "Tears of the Prophets")

Background Information

It is unknown whether the Federation News Service is a state-supported agency.

In DS9: "Call to Arms", Jake first identifies the news organization as the Starfleet News Service, but later in the episode it is referred to as the Federation News Service. The script refers to it as the Federation News Service throughout.

The non-canon book series Star Trek: Vanguard has a character named Tim Pennington who is a reporter for the FNS.
