The esophagus was part of the digestive system of many lifeforms, including most humanoids. The opening to the esophagus was refered to as the esophageal aperture.

When Lwaxana Troi was attracted to Odo in 2369, he attempted to lose her interest in that he couldn't eat as he did not have an esophagus. (DS9: "The Forsaken")

In 2370, Worf threatened to rip out Byleth's esophagus with his bare hands, after the ambassador made a number of demands of him in an abrupt manner. (TNG: "Liaisons")
