The comedian was never mentioned in dialog; this name came from a list of comedians.
This character was named for Gene Roddenberry's personal assistant Ernie Over. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion)
In the remastered version of the episode, Ernie Over was changed to Jim Hardy.
