Lieutenant Erickson was a male Human Starfleet operations division officer who lived during the mid-23rd century. He served as one of the historians aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk.

In 2269, with the assistance of the Guardian of Forever, Erickson joined Kirk and Spock in their observations of Federation history, as well as firsthand accounts of Orion history.

Later, after returning to an alternate timeline, he reviewed their actions in the past, but was unable to find anything that would have changed history enough to erase Spock from existence as of 2269. (TAS: "Yesteryear")

Background information[]

Erickson was voiced by James Doohan.

In the script of "Yesteryear", Erickson was described as "a small, intense man."

Apocrypha[]

According to both the novelization of "Yesteryear" (in Star Trek Log 1) and The Four Years War role playing game sourcebook, this character's first name was "Ted". Also in the novelization, Erickson is actually a Federation historian, similar to Grey and Aleek-Om, and is in his mid-forties.

According to the novel Forgotten History, Ted Erikson was the ship's historian who did his thesis on indigenous civilizations transformed by alien conquest.

The novel The Fire and the Rose switches the names of Erickson and Bates, so that "Paul Bates" accompanies Kirk and Spock through the Guardian, while records officer "Erikson" stays on the ship and researches Spock's history. This switch happened because both characters' names are not mentioned in dialogue, so the author was unable to determine which was which and ended up making the wrong guess. [1] Paul Bates is a security officer, not a historian and is identified as the unnamed security guard seen in The City on the Edge of Forever.
