A star chart depicting the location of Epsilon Indi

Epsilon Indi was a system centered around a star located about 11.8 light years from Sol.

In early history, a band of marauders based around Triacus wreaked chaos on the inhabitants of the Epsilon Indi system. After many centuries of intrusion, the inhabitants of Epsilon Indi were finally able to rise up and destroy the marauders, leading to their corporeal extinction. (TOS: "And the Children Shall Lead")

On several occasions in 2364, viewscreen readouts aboard the USS Enterprise-D showed the location of Epsilon Indi, in the form of charts from the Enterprise library computer. (TNG: "The Naked Now", "The Last Outpost", "Conspiracy")

Wesley Crusher spotted this star when he was looking out of the windows in Ten Forward after his mother was transferred to Starfleet Medical in 2365. (TNG: "The Child")

Background

The Enterprise computer's star chart was a drawing by Rick Sternbach that had originally been published, years earlier, on page 77 of the non-canon reference book Spaceflight Chronology. This chart showed Earth commercial and exploration routes after the use of warp drive began. Epsilon Indi was not a destination on any of the routes.

According to the Star Trek: Star Charts, by Geoffrey Mandel,

    • Page 45: Epsilon Indi was an orange dwarf. One of its planets was named Draylax. Draylax was an alternate name for this system. Epsilon India was a stop on the Earth trade routes in the 22nd century. The system was located approximately 12 light years from Sol (Earth).
    • United Federation of Planets: Epsilon Indi's planet, Draylax, was a member planet of the United Federation of Planets. Epsilon Indi was located in the Beta Quadrant.

Epsilon Indi was a real star in the Indus constellation. In 2003, two brown dwarfs were discovered to be orbiting this star.

Apocrypha

The Star Fleet Technical Manual listed the Star Empire of Epsilon Indii as one of the founding members of the Federation. The eighth planet of the Epsilon Indi was stated to be Andor, the homeworld of the Andorian race in The Worlds of the Federation and several fan fiction publications.
