Shuttle 1 was a Federation Takayama-type shuttlecraft that was in service to Starfleet in the mid-23rd century, attached to the USS Enterprise.

In 2259, this shuttle was piloted by Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu to a volcano on the planet Nibiru. While hovering over the volcano, Spock ziplined to the caldera of an erupting volcano. The ash cloud of the volcano prevented the indigenous population from seeing the shuttle. However, the cloud produced heat and atmospheric distortions which wreaked havoc with the shuttle's stabilizers. Eventually, dust from the cloud caused one of the shuttle's nacelles to overheat and explode. Adding to the shuttle's woes, a basaltic rock expelled from the volcano slammed into the underside of the vehicle, causing severe damage. Sulu, after determining that the vessel would be incapable of reaching a designated drop location, ordered an evacuation. Working on autopilot, the shuttle crashed into the planet's ocean. The CGI model for this shuttle bore the number 7. The number was obscured by the motion of the model. Later, in the film, this shuttle, as Shuttle 7, was seen lifting off from a hangar on Earth and falling off its platform as the Enterprise was falling into the atmosphere of Earth.
