The term English refers to anything originating from the nation-state of England, including its people, as well as the English language.
To have originated from such a small island country, English culture had a disproportionate impact on the peoples of Earth because England once controlled a global empire that even included portions of the future United States of America. That outreach was made possible through a combination of an advanced navy, numerous voyages of discovery, and a cosmopolitan trade network.
A pivotal moment in the expansion of English culture was the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 CE. A Spanish victory would have almost ensured the marginalization of British influence on world affairs. (ENT: "Future Tense")
