The term English refers to anything originating from the nation-state of England, including its people, as well as the English language.
English culture had an impact on the people of Earth because England, as part of the nation-state Great Britain, once controlled a global empire that included portions of the future United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, and more. That outreach was made possible through a combination of an advanced navy, numerous voyages of discovery, and a cosmopolitan trade network.
A pivotal moment in the expansion of English culture was the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 AD. A Spanish victory would have almost ensured the marginalization of British influence on world affairs. (ENT: "Future Tense")
