A dangerous maneuvre, the Emergency core shutdown involves shutting down the warp core on Federation starships by means other than regular helm control. This procedure is very rarely used, since it leaves the ship in question without warp power for over a week.
Geordi La Forge atempted to do an emergency core shutdown on the USS Enterprise, when the ship jumped to warp for no apperant reason and he was unable to stop it. The ship jumped out of warp, however, before he could begin the procedure. (TNG: "Emergence")
