The Elway Theorem was a proposal for adaptive transport or folded-space transport from a scientist named Elway, a new method of transportation utilizing inter-dimensional shifting.

The Elway theorem was abandoned mid-23rd century after it proved to be inaccurate: the method turned out to be fatal. Such transportation would result in cumulative damage as every jump would slightly warp the DNA and affect the cell chemistry of anyone using such technology.

In 2366, upon studying a faint nuclear vibration left behind as a byproduct of a transportation method being utilized by Ansata terrorists, Wesley Crusher realized that they were using a folded-space transporter based on the Elway Theorem, they called the inverter, in order to prevent the Rutian authorities from tracking their movements.
