Background
Edit
This listing is based on the name of the only known vessel of its type, the Elkins itself. The ship-type was named for DS9 VFX coordinator, Judy Elkins.
Studio model
Edit
The episode "A Time to Stand" needed a shot of a retreating flotilla of Starfleet vessels. To beef out the scene, the production staff built several new ships, "kitbashing" them out of parts from commercially available AMT/Ertl-Star Trek model kits. The Elkins-type model was kitbashed from the saucer section of a Revell-Monogram USS Voyager model, the body of an F-14 fighter jet model, warp pylons from an AMT/Ertl runabout model, and warp nacelles from an AMT/Ertl USS Reliant model.wbm The episode marks its only appearance. The Elkins-type was probably inspired by the Voyager prototype study model by Rick Sternbach. Many have confused the Elkins with the Voyager Prototype due to their similar designs.
Members of the production team who pitched in to build the models for the episode were, amongst others, Gary Hutzel, Judy Elkins, Adam Buckner and Anthony Fredrickson.
