Electromagnetic focusing was part of the transporter operating process of Starfleet transporters in the mid-23rd century in the alternate reality created by Nero and the Narada. (Star Trek)
The term comes from a graphic on the transporter operations console. It is unknown if the Prime universe's transporters also involve this process.
