Edgar Allan Poe was an American poet who was famous for his macabre style of writing. One of his most famous works is the poem The Raven.

In 2266, under the influence of Charlie Evans, Spock was forced to say, "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary," from Poe's poem The Raven. (TOS: "Charlie X")

Tom Paris once commented that a Class J nebula USS Voyager encountered reminded him of "something out of Edgar Allan Poe." (VOY: "The Haunting of Deck Twelve")
