The EMH backup module is a device carried on Starfleet Starships equipped with Emergency Medical Holograms. It carries a backup version of the EMH, in case it is damaged, or lost. It's memory is routinely updated.
The USS Voyager's EMH backup module was lost in an attack, and discovered centuries later by an alien race. (VOY: "Living Witness")
