The drum was an ancient instrument found on many planets, including Earth. Drums could be played by hand or with special drumsticks.
On 19th century Earth, military officers would upend a drum on the battlefield, sit at it and dispense summary justice in so-called drumhead trials. Those facing those trials often were sentenced to death. (TNG: "The Drumhead")
Doctor Phlox owned an Aldebaran drum set, which some point before 2154 he lent to his first wife's third husband, Groznik. In the event of Phloxs' death, he wanted Groznik to keep the drums. (ENT: "Zero Hour")
