Drones were worker robots under the control of the Shore Leave Planet master computer. They were triangular shaped in the horizontal direction, with three extendable arms at each corner of the triangle. The drone used an unknown type of anti-gravity technology to hover and move. (TAS: "Once Upon a Planet")
The novelization of "Once Upon a Planet" (as published in Star Trek Log 3) describes this type of hovercraft as metallic, "about a meter high and long," "[not] much bigger than a coffee table," with six mechanical, metal arms, antennae and ringed with electronic lenses.
