He and fellow screenwriter Nelson Gidding earned an Academy Award nomination for their work on the screenplay to the 1958 film, I Want to Live! This film was directed by Robert Wise and featured Theodore Bikel in the cast.
Mankiewicz also earned an Emmy Award nomination in 1970 for Outstanding Writing Achievement on the pilot episode of Marcus Welby, M.D. He would go on to write further episodes for the show, and also wrote episodes for other programs such as Ironside and Mannix.
He is the son of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, who co-wrote the 1941 classic Citizen Kane with director Orson Welles, and won a shared Academy Award for the film. Robert Wise was the editor of Citizen Kane.
