A Doctor of Medicine, abbreviated MD, was an Earth title to an accredited medical physician. This title was adopted by the Federation.

In the mystery novel Dangerous Ground, the protagonist, Doctor John Rawley, earned his MD upon graduation from Johns Hopkins in the mid-20th century. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")

Medical Careers in Star Fleet varies upon Specialties. Its known that to be Chief Medical Officer, a physicians must be highly skilled in both surgery as well as in general medicine. It is unknown if physicians still spend time in specializing in different areas of medicine. However it is known that that abilities differs from different physicians. For example when Picard required Doctor Pulaskis's superior surgery skills during his replacement surgery for his heart.
