The Dixon Hill series was a novel series written by author Tracy Tormé, and featured detective Dixon Hill, who first appeared in the short story The Big Good-Bye, published on Earth in the pulp magazine Amazing Detective Stories in 1934.

The Dixon Hill series

The Black Orchid was made into a film, Dixon Hill and the Black Orchid sometime before the 22nd century. The series was published to Federation holosuites by Broht & Forrester in the 24th century. (ENT: "Cogenitor", VOY: "Author, Author")

The Big Good-Bye

As in all Dixon Hill holographic novels, The Big Good-Bye allows the user to play the private investigator character of Dixon Hill in the San Francisco of 1941.

In 2364 (on stardate 41997.7), a holodeck malfunction aboard the USS Enterprise-D led to an override of safety protocols. Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Dr. Beverly Crusher, historian Whalen and Data were soon caught up in a real case in which the consequences could prove fatal indeed. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")

The episode even inspired at least one novel, 2002's Star Trek: The Next Generation "A Hard Rain" by Dean Wesley Smith. In the novel, Picard has to enter the holodeck to locate the 'Heart of the Adjuster' or else the Enterprise will be destroyed.

In 2365 (on stardate 42859.2), Captain Picard once again took the role of Dixon Hill, again accompanied by Data, in order to flee Lwaxana Troi's manhunt. Lwaxana, however, eventually located him, but became infatuated with one of the holographic characters. (TNG: "Manhunt")

In 2373, aboard the USS Enterprise-E, Picard accessed the program with Lily Sloane in order to escape Borg pursuit. Disengaging the safety protocols, Picard was able to kill a few Borg drones using a Thompson .45ACP sub-machine gun, thanks to the Borg never having learned how to adapt to solid pellet rounds.(Star Trek: First Contact)

Unspecified

In 2367 (on stardate 44502.7), Picard introduced Guinan to the Dixon Hill program, where she played his cousin Gloria. Guinan, however, was not impressed. (TNG: "Clues")
