Deng was a science officer serving aboard the USS Enterprise-D.

In 2369, she was part of team six, an away team sent to Bersallis III under the command of Lieutenant Commander Nella Daren. The away teams were tasked with setting up a series of thermal deflector units to halt the advance of a firestorm long enough to allow the evacuation of colonists on the planet. The firestorm advanced faster than anticipated, and the away teams needed to remain behind to manually calibrate the deflectors. Although all of the colonists were safely transported to the Enterprise, contact with some of the away teams was lost as the firestorm overtook the deflectors. Team six used their phasers to create resonance disruptions in the force field, which generated pockets in which they stood to wait out the storm. Deng survived and was transported back to the Enterprise with Daren, but teammate Richardson died as Deng and Daren watched helplessly. (TNG: "Lessons")
