- In his author's notes, Howard Weinstein states that the novel takes place in the years immediately following the Enterprise's encounter with V'ger in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
- Weinstein also states that his idea for his novel began when he was asked to suggest concepts for the plot of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, for which Weinstein was credited with "thanks".
