The etymology of the 20th century craps slang-phrase "Eighter from Decatur, County Seat of Wise", meaning that the player needed to roll an eight on the die, originated in reference to this city.

The novel Hotel Royale character Texas, a Lubbock native encountered by the crew of the USS Enterprise-D, was overheard making a reference to Decatur while he and Vanessa played the craps table in 2365. (TNG: "The Royale")
