David McWhirter is a director who worked as DGA Trainee on several fifth season episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. McWhirter later worked as second second assistant director and second assistant director on J. Michael Straczynski's science fiction series Babylon 5 (1995-1998) and the following television movies Babylon 5: In the Beginning (1998), Babylon 5: Thirdspace (1998), Babylon 5: The River of Souls (1998), and Babylon 5: A Call to Arms (1999).

McWhirter was DGA Trainee on the television comedy Love Can Be Murder (1992, with Corbin Bernsen and Cliff DeYoung), the comedy Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993, with Patrick Stewart), the pilot episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993, with Teri Hatcher, Tracy Scoggins, K Callan, Persis Khambatta, Kenneth Tigar, and Clyde Kusatsu), and the sport drama Blue Chips (1994, with Alfre Woodard and Jim Beaver).

Further credits as assistant director include the thriller Murder in the First (1995, with Christian Slater, Brad Dourif, and Ben Slack), the romance A Walk in the Clouds (1995), episodes of Sliders (1999-2000), Ally McBeal (1999-2000), For the People (2002), The D.A. (2004), Nip/Tuck (2005), State of Mind (2007), Trust Me (2009), Better Off Ted (2009), Raising Hope (2010), Suburgatory (2011), and The Closer (2005-2011).

McWhirter made his directing debut in 2008 with the short film Daryl from OnCar on which he also worked as producer and which featured Bob Clendenin, Michele Scarabelli, and Noon Orsatti. He also directed three episodes of The Closer (2009-2011).
