For additional meanings of "Daedalus", please see Daedalus.

In Greek mythology, Daedalus was a talented architect, inventor and craftsman who resided in Athens. He created a labyrinth for King Minos but later lost the king's approval and so was himself locked in the labyrinth. Eventually, he attempted to escape Crete by constructing wings for he and his young son, Icarus. When they attempted to use the wings, however, Icarus flew too close to the sun, fell into the water below and drowned. Later, Daedalus arrived unharmed in Sicily, where he built a temple to Apollo and hung up his wings as an offering to the Greek god.

In 2376, Alice told part of this myth to Tom Paris, who revealed that the tale was one of his favorite myths. However, Alice left out any mention of Icarus when she recounted the story, as she was trying to seduce Paris into believing that her systems were extremely efficient. (VOY: "Alice")

A fourth season episode of Star Trek: Enterprise was called "Daedalus", and several parallels between the episode's story and the myth can be drawn.
