D'Vahl-type on the cover of its own magazine outing

According to the final draft of the "Carbon Creek" script, dated 18 September 2002, the D'Vahl was visually identified as a Vulcan transport, however, a hand-written note, on the post-production version of same script, finalized the classification of the D'Vahl in dialog as a "Vulcan survey vessel".

In the script of "Awakening", this type of craft was consistently referred to as a "Vulcan patrol ship". They should not be confused with the Vulcan patrol craft, a type of aircraft mentioned through the same three episode arc.

This studio model appeared as both the 20th century survey vessel and later appeared, unmodified, as a 22nd century patrol ship. This design by Doug Drexler, who described the model as a "Vulcan D'Vahl Type Fighter", and described it as "[exhibiting] a rotund penguiny quality fused with the Vulcan lander from [Star Trek: First Contact], and Chesley Bonnestell's [sic] moonship from [Destination Moon]."

The studio model was created as a CGI model at Eden FX, the only remaining visual effects company working on televised Star Trek at the time, and which was re-utilized for print publication purposes when the design received its own outing as the "Vulcan Survey Vessel D'Vahl" in the British partwork publication, Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, in 2019.
