Massive computer malfunctions are plaguing the Enterprise when Kirk suddenly receives a shocking message from Starfleet Command: Centaurus has been bombed and annihilated; thousands are dead. Background Information Edit

• Though the stardate implies the events take place after Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the ranks and cover image suggest a date during the five-year mission. Furthermore Uhura taking command of the Enterprise places this novel before "The Lorelei Signal" (2269), but at least two years after "Court Martial" (2267) as per references to Samuel Cogley.
