Organized crime is a term typically used by police to describe a group of people collectively engaged in ongoing criminal activities. These groups can be motivated by profit or political reasons. Involvement in such a group is often regarded as a crime in and of itself.

A gang is a group that engages in illegal activity, the members of which are known as gangsters.

In Chicago of the 1920s, gangs almost took over from conventional government when the latter nearly broke down. One book that was later published about the gang culture of that time was Chicago Mobs of the Twenties, which ultimately went on to heavily influence the highly-imitative Iotian culture of Sigma Iotia II. (TOS: "A Piece of the Action") A similar gang-related publication was Chicago Gangs. (ENT: "Horizon")

One form of gang is a rape gang, which is typical on the planet Turkana IV. (TNG: "The Naked Now", "Legacy")

In 1944 of an alternate timeline wherein the Nazis occupied much of the United States of America, a gangster called Sal told Jonathan Archer that Irish gangs were among numerous groups that were rebelling against the Nazis (other such collectives being dockworkers, black people and women). (ENT: "Storm Front")
