A Cowboy is a term that is usually meant for a male that herds animals, like cows, horses and other livestock. Started in North America in the late 19th century. In addition to ranch work, some cowboys work for or participate in rodeos.They ride horses and wear cowboy hats, many slept on their horses while riding. Cowgirls had a less-well known historical role, but did much of the same work that the men did.

A cowboy was a type of cattle herder typical of the Ancient West period of Earth. It was also a more general term referring to those living in the Ancient West, especially in the fiction genre known as Western.

Charles Tucker once speculated that Zefram Cochrane spent his nights reading "about cowboys and Indians". (ENT: "Shuttlepod One")

In 2372, after Commander Chakotay had left the USS Voyager to try to deal with Seska on his own, Captain Kathryn Janeway complained that he had "run off like some cowboy". (VOY: "Maneuvers")
